  • Basic Fire Fighting (STCW)

    Course Length:  16 hours

    Regulatory Reference:  Section A-VI/2 of the STCW Code

    Overview:  The Basic Firefighting course contained within STCW meet the mandatory minimum requirements for seafarers for familiarization, basic safety training and instruction in accordance with Section A-VI/2 of the STCW Code.

    Course Required by:  USCG

    Prerequisites:  These courses are intended as basic training for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship as part of the ship's complement with designated safety duties in operation of the ship. There are no particular educational requirements. All trainees must be certified by a doctor to be in good health.

    Course Objectives: Upon completion of Section A-VI/1-2, Basic Fire Fighting, the student will be familiar with:
    1. Properly donning a fire suit
    2. Properly donning and using a self contained breathing apparatus
    3. Using portable fire extinguishers to put out class A, B, And C class fires (this exercise is conducted 4 times: once for each class of fire)
    4. Using all purpose nozzles for protection and putting fires out
     

    5. Advancement of hose teams with the team leader giving commands
    6. Entering an internal space with S.C.B.A. and put out fire with fire hose
    7. Properly entering a watertight door with a fire behind door
    8. Rescuing a victim (min 165lbs.) from a smoke filled room wearing an S.C.B.A.
    9. Taking immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency
    10. Performing an emergency drill following a station bill
    11. Identifying what extinguishers to use on what class fire
    12. Properly ventilating a fire
    13. Correctly over hauling a fire
    14. Effectively containing a fire and using suppression system

    Written Exam: SMS requires a minimum score of 70%. Incorrectly answered questions will be reviewed with student to ensure understanding before completion of course.

    Retraining: Student is responsible for retraining every five years.
