  • Basic Safety Training (BST) STCW-95 (entire program) USCG

    Overview:  The Basic Safety Training course is a 5-day course that includes theory and practical hands-on training and assessment for the following four modules of STCW A-VI/1-1 to 1-4. The modules can be taken together over 5 days or broken into individual modules as listed below.

    1. Personal Survival Techniques: 12hrs
    2. Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities: 4hrs
    3. Basic Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting: 16hrs
    4. Elementary First Aid: 8hrs
    Course Length: 40hrs | Course Required By: United States Coast Guard

    Course Objectives:
    Upon completion of Section A-VI/1-2, Basic Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting, the student will be able to:
    • Properly don a fire suit
    • Properly don and use a self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
    • Using portable fire extinguishers, put out class A, B, and C class fires (this exercise is conducted 3 times: once for each class of fire)
    • Use an all purpose nozzle for protection and extinguishing fires
    • Advancement of hose teams with the team leader giving commands
    • Enter an internal space with S.C.B.A. and extinguish fire with fire hose
    • Properly enter a watertight door with a fire behind door
    • Rescue a victim (min 165lbs.) from a smoke filled room wearing an S.C.B.A.
    • Take immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency
    • Perform an emergency drill in accordance with a station bill
    • Identifying what extinguishers to use on what class fire
    • Properly ventilate a fire
    • Correctly overhaul a fire
    • Effectively contain a fire using a suppression system
    Upon completion of Section A-VI/1-3, Elementary First Aid, the student will be familiar with:
    • Using barriers
    • Insuring scene is safe setup
    • Calling EMS
    • Primary Assessment of patient
    • Checking airway, breathing, circulation, and shock
    • Positioning the patient
    • CPR
    • Stop Bleeding
    • Procuring vital signs
    • Identifying signs and symptoms for heart problems, stroke, allergic reactions, asthma, poisoning, diabetic, epileptic, and injury assessments
    • Treating fractures, head, neck and back injuries
    • Treating wounds
    • Properly bandaging patient
    • Caring for heat and cold exposure
    • Treating for burns, scalds, and electrical injuries
    • Treat and manage amputations
    • Treat and manage bites and stings (marine, animal, human, insects)
    Upon completion of Section A-VI/1-4, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility, the trainee will be able to:
    • Understand types of Emergencies and actions to take
    • Recognize emergency signals in station bill and use of safety equipment
    • Know the values of drills and training
    • Understand importance of working safely
    • Use appropriate escape routes
    • Understand effective communication
    • Understand importance of precautions prior to entering a confined space
    • Recognize when to use Lock Out Tag Out
    • Recognize duties regarding pollution prevention
    • Understand policies regarding drug and alcohol abuse
    • Know the importance of maintaining appropriate employee relations
    Upon completion of Section A-VI/1-1 46 CFR 10.205 (I) (1), Personal Survival Techniques, the trainee will be familiar with:
    • Abandonment and survival
    • Types of lifesaving appliances carried on ships
    • Personal lifesaving equipment
    • Survival crafts and survival crafts equipment
    • Helicopter safety
    Prerequisites: These courses are approved to satisfy the requirements for Basic Safety Training on all size vessels. There are no tonnage limits on this course. It is appropriate for all crew members. There are no particular educational requirements. All trainees must be certified by a doctor to be in good health.

    Written Exam: A minimum written test score of 70 %( 80% is required for PSSR). Students that fail the test will undergo remediation and be allowed 1 retest. A second failure requires repeating the course before they may test again.

    Retraining:  Student is responsible for retraining every five years.
